Casa Antonio Gramsci

It is situated in Ghilarza's historic centre, in a modest basalt house of the late 1800. Antonio Gramsci (Ales 1891-Roma 1937) lived here between 1898 and 1914. He was one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party and among the most important 1900 political leaders and intellectuals. In 1926 he was arrested for opposing fascism, put on trail in 1928 and confined in Turi¢ï¿½ï¿½s prison, near Bari, were he remained until November 1933. Gramsci House is basically a centre for documentation, research and museum activities. The main theme concerns Gramsci ' s life in Sardinia, his studies, University included, his thought, journalistic and political activity, his imprisonment and death. The museum is structured into six room: three on the ground floor, three on the first floor, a garden and a small room. Nowadays the house is also a library and an expositive space for temporary exhibitions. The ground floor is composed of an entrance, three rooms and a courtyard. In the first room, once the ¢ï¿½ï¿½good room¢ï¿½ï¿½ (where to entertain visitors), the letter written on 10 May 1928 by Gramsci to his mother is reproduced enlarged on a Plexiglas support. In this letter he reminds of his condition of political prisoner and of paying his punishment for not having changed his own opinion. Then, visitors find the kitchen, with a "cannitzada" (canes) ceiling, typical of Sardinian houses, and a hidden well behind a two-door cage now employed as a meeting and study room. A third room hosts the library, containing about 3000 volumes in different languages regarding the history of the worker movement in Sardinia and worldwide and Gramsci¢ï¿½ï¿½s thought and work. The kitchen introduces to the courtyard, where Gramsci and his brothers used to play games, which still keeps the old pavement and flowerbeds delimited by stones and tiles. From the main entrance, a staircase leads to the first floor, divided into three room, once (one still today) bedrooms. A didactic tour built with images, photographs, articles, certificates, personal objects, proposes the most remarkable steps of his intellectual life. A tape library stores the witnesses of over forty people who met him: among them Pertini, Terracini, Longo, Silone, Basso. On a wall Turi¢ï¿½ï¿½s prison cell, where Gramsci was confined, is reproduced. In one of the rooms, a period bedroom and a window overlooking the courtyard have been reconstructed. The furniture is made up of a bed, a bedside table and toilet products: an iron support holding a basin and a jug. There are architectonic barriers.
