Boroneddu

The inhabited centre of Boroneddu is surrounded by a real crown of nuraghi; as well as the 'Su Montigu' complex, which rises on high ground and dominates the inhabited centre, we should also mention the 'Fiscas', 'Ispinosu', 'Ostele', 'Malosa', 'Cortinas' and 'Trubeli' Nuraghi.. In the heart of the village lies the parish Church of 'San Lorenzo Martire', dating back to 1886 and built of perfectly square ashlars of dark basalt. The 'Carboni House' is also worth a particular mention, with its trachyte architraves bearing ornamental decorations in the shape of animals and plants. But among the many interesting cultural attractions offered by Boroneddu, an important place is filled by the Museum of Sardinian Tales, which proposes the mysterious and fascinating world of traditional Sardinian fairytales inhabited with characters like 'Maschinganna', 'the Janas', 'Luxia Arrabiosa', 'Pulighitta' and many others. About 2 km away we find the Novenario of San Salvatore, rising on the ruins of Orene, the old centre of the 'Giudicato' period. It is made up of a group of shelters ('muristenes') used for welcoming the pilgrims during the nine days of the novena and laid out around the little country church. For those wishing for a pleasant walk through rockroses, mastic and durmast trees with which the Boroneddu countryside abounds, an excursion towards Lake Omodeo is recommended; the lake was created artificially between 1919 and 1924, and offers a wonderful scenic effect due to the contrast between the azure-blue of its water and the green of the Mediterranean shrub that borders its shores. One of the most important festivals is the Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate with its traditional bonfire which is lit on the night between 16th and 17th January and during which "sa panischedda", a tasty sweet made with the 'sapa' (cooked must) of prickly pears, walnuts and almonds is offered to all the participants. In March the 'Asparagus and Wild Fennel' Festival takes place. Halfway through September is the turn of the lively and intense feast dedicated to San Salvatore, held in the novenario of the same name with typical tasty dishes, solemn moments of prayer and traditional music. The 'Festival of the Prickly Pear', with which the countryside of Boroneddu abounds, represents another interesting appointment: on this occasion all sorts of fantastic dishes are elaborated using this sweet fruit.
