Villa Verde

The village is well known for the presence of obsidian with which its territory abounds. Although there are no quarries here, there are numerous lithic stations and workshops for the craft industry of this material. The historic centre of this village is well looked after and most charming and preserves three churches of notable artistic interest; namely, the recently constructed Church of the 'Beata Vergine Assunta', the one of San Sebastiano and the Church of San Mauro. An important piece of sculpture by Maestro Luigi Taras can be admired in the main square. A group of local sculptors collaborated in the working of a 30-ton block of basalt, which serves as a war memorial and stands out as a symbol of peace and perpetual memory. While following this trail around the historic centre, the visitor can make a stop at the 'Museo Antiquarium dell'Ossidiana', (Obsidian Antiquarian Museum), a thematic museum about this ancient black gold. There are several nuraghi found around the territory. Worthy of note are the Pre-Nuraghic and Nuraghic village of Brunk'e s'Omu, with a poly-lobated central tower; the Pre-Nuraghic and Nuraghic village of Nurax'e Mau, with a poly-lobated central tower; the holy well at Corongiu Arrubiu and the Nuraghic wells at Su Putzu de Prau and Corongiu Arrubiu. The minor nuraghi are those of Gergui, Giuali, Su Nuraxi and Is Cottillas. The village offers its visitor a series of nature trails of certain interest. For example, we should note the area of Mitza Margiani which has ilex woods, a spring that also feeds the communal aqueduct and the archaeological area; the area of Santu Mauru, with the Nuraghic area of Nurax'e Mau, the wetlands area, the area of the plateau and the 'tall" forest with ilex and cork trees. As regards events, we should mention the Feast of the Buon Pastore held on the first Sunday in June. This takes place in the country area of Mitza Margiani, where a series of religious meetings take place with the tasting of typical dishes.
