Bonarcado

A visit to Bonarcado means discovering two of the most interesting examples of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia. In fact, the gems of this little village of the Montiferru area, are the Byzantine sanctuary and the Romanesque church dedicated to Santa Maria of Bonarcado: a religious complex overlooking a charming little square in the historic centre and site of one of the most ancient cults of the Virgin to be found on the Island. The sanctuary of the Madonna di Bonacattu was built in brick between the VII and VIII century, re-utilising part of an existing thermal baths dating from the Roman period: the western facade, richly adorned with pensile arches and ceramic basins was constructed in the XIII century , while the northern one, in Neo-Romanesque style dates back to 1933. Inside we find a wonderful terracotta bas-relief from the XV century depicting the Madonna. In front of the sanctuary, the Calmadolite abbey of Santa Maria was constructed in dark basalt stone around the first half of the XII century. The characteristic faade with its sweeping arches belongs to the first building phase, while the other structures were built at later stages in a more approximative style, distinguished by their particular bellow-shaped decorations. The 'Condaghe of Santa Maria of Bonarcado' was produced right here in the abbey in around the XII-XIII century, an important document containing historical, economic and social information as well as being one of the earliest texts written in the Sardinian language. The Bonarcado area offers plenty of places to visit, thanks to its suggestive location where you can go on relaxing walks. On the road for Santu Lussurgiu, you can visit the Pranos springs, famous for their excellent mineral water and especially the Sos Molinos waterfalls and valley, one of the most enchanting places in the Montiferru area. There are a number of nuraghi in the area, like the 'Serra Crastula' and the 'Serra Ollastu' ones. Just like all the other villages in Sardinia, the people of Bonarcado also express their love and veneration for their saints through feasts and festivals involving the whole population. The most important feast is the one in honour of 'Nostra Signora of Bonacattu', held on September 18th and 19th at the same time as the 'Nougat Festival'. The focal point of the feast is represented by the religious procession when the statue of the Madonna is carried around the narrow lanes of the historic centre. This is followed by the civil celebrations with the tasting and sale of nougat, a display of local craftwork and folkloristic and musical events. Other important feasts are those on January 19th in honour of San Sebastiano, with its mounted procession all the way to the little church with the same name and the 'pariglie' (horse races) around the streets of the centre and also the feast of San Romualdo on the 8th February. In June it is the turn of the 'Cherry Festival', a product which has started to be increasingly cultivated again in these last few years.
