Scano di Montiferro

The village is framed by the Montiferru mountain, whose highest point is represented by Mount Urtigu (1050 m). The Parish Church of 'San Pietro Apostolo' is of certain historic interest, dating back to the XVIII century, and houses fine artistic works such as a gilt and multi-coloured wooden simulacrum depicting a seated San Pietro, dating back to the XVII century and two statues of Spanish origins. The Church of San Nicol, with its neoclassical style facade, preserves a painting by Emilio Scherer, an artist who lived and worked at the beginning of the first half of the XX century. Another interesting stop can be made at the Church of the 'Santo Rosario', seat of the confraternity of the same name, which houses the precious statue attributed to the sculptor, Giuseppe Anonio Lonis, who worked in Sardinia in the XVIII century. There are numerous springs in the countryside surrounding the village and it is covered with age-old woods of ilex, oak, holly and strawberry-trees. The mountainous area near the village is of particular geological interest: Pedras de Fogu, Sa Rocca Traessa and the caves of Su Suterru and Su Coro Malzu. The village can boast renowned food and wine traditions which are renewed with "sa timballa de arrosu", a sort of rice flan with a meat and vegetable filling. An excellent oil and a prized wine are also produced here, which reflect the abundance of olive groves and vineyards in the territory. The typical pear-shaped "su casizzolu' cheese also has a very special taste. The XVII century country Church of Sant'Antioco, rises not far from the inhabited centre and is the fulcrum for the Feast dedicated to the Martyr, which takes place here three times a year. The sanctuary of Santa Barbara is wedged into the rocks in an area occupied by nuraghi and 'domus de janas'.
