Marrubiu

The 'Praetorium of Muru de Bangiu' is an extremely important monument of ancient Marrubiu. It is an important building complex from the II century BC, restructured in III-IV AD and finally abandoned in the VI century. Excavations here have brought to light an important inscription where the term "praetorium" appears, interpreted as proof of the fact that the complex was the temporary seat of the governor, whenever he transferred from the permanent seat of Caralis towards the north of Sardinia. The Church of Santa Maria of Zuradili, the old parish church of the long-gone village, is still found in the countryside of Marrubiu. Legend tells that its inhabitants on moving to Marrubiu, left behind a statuette of the Madonna in the old village and for this reason on the first Sunday in May, a procession of horsemen and 'traccas' (traditional carts) accompany the Madonna to the sanctuary of Santa Maria of Zuradili, now found in the countryside, where various celebrations are held in honour of the Virgin. Marrubiu is also very famous for its Carnival which, together with those of San Gavino Monreale and Tempio, is certainly one of the most well-known and popular in Sardinia.
