Siamanna

One of the major places of cultural interest in this little village is the Church of Santa Lucia. The original structure was built in 1512 by the Canon Antonio Formentoni. Later, in the early years of the twentieth century, this particular structure was partially destroyed. For this reason in the thirties, a new church was rebuilt on the old walls, thanks to a contribution from Giuseppe Minieri, to whom the population of Siamanna later dedicated the square in front of the church courtyard. The Feast of Santa Lucia is held on 21st and 22nd August, during which two other important well known and popular events take place. The first is "De Su Pannu' Palio; in the past, the participants used to go to the little shops in the area where the Genovese shopkeepers and merchants from Ghilarza sold precious materials. On their return, once they got near to the church, the headlong race began: whoever came first, had the honour of carrying the cloth during the procession the following day. The present edition, to keep up with the times, has replaced the precious damask cloth with prizes in money. The festival of typical local products, (the typical bread from Siamanna, dessert grapes and cheeses), is held on the same day as the 'palio'. Nature lovers should go for a walk on the nearby Mount Grighine, where it is possible to admire numerous animal and plant species.
