Palmas Arborea

The territory offers landscapes with heterogeneous contours. Mount Arci, the second highest massif in the Oristano area, lies behind the village and in the background we find the Pauli Majori lagoon with its calm stretch of water and splendid beaches. These are landscapes of many hues which offer colours, moments and scents filled with suggestion to the eyes of the beholder. The Pauli Majori lagoon hosts rare species of waterfowl and it is possible to go bird-watching here, in the company of expert guides. The lagoon is comprised in the Ramsar convention. The historic centre is characterised by buildings made in green bricks. At the centre of the village, we find the little Parish Church of Sant'Antioco, in whose honour a number of feasts are held during the year, namely in April, July and in November, the month when the Martyr died. One of the most interesting events is the "Pariglie Palmaresi". This is a horseback parade accompanied by folk groups. The riders take part in a race known as "Is tres aneddus" (the three rings), where they have to try and insert their lance called "su mazzuccu" into three rings. At the end of the race the riders put on a display of acrobatic feats on top of their horses. As regards culinary aspects, a Mycological Show is held in November which includes an exhibition and mushroom tasting.
