Riola Sardo

The territory is scattered with nuraghi: the monuments of 'Oresimbula', 'de Priogu', 'Biancu' and 'Zuaddas' are found here. The Parish Church of San Martino in the inhabited area, is also of historical and cultural interest. It dates to the XVI century but is probably of older foundation in Romanesque style; the building has a facade built with sandstone blocks with arched coping and a bell-tower with a bulb-shaped dome, similar to the Cathedral of Oristano. The church houses a XVI century Crucifix, two holy water stoups from the XVII century and wooden choir stalls from 1884. 'Casa Carta' rises behind the parish church; in this old building from the XVII century, all the charm of a nobleman?s residence has persisted though the course of time, The calendar of events held in Riola Sardo includes, on 26th July, a solemn procession in honour of Sant'Anna and San Gioacchino; the next day, dancing, firework displays, music and song enliven the streets of the village, as the background to the Feast of San Martino. An interesting event for wine-lovers is certainly represented by the 'International Vernaccia Meeting'; from Friday to Sunday, the participants gather in the gardens and then go for excursions in and around the inhabited centre. On 11th November, it is the turn of the celebrations for San Martino. Src: http://www.sardegnaturismo.it/offerta/cultura/cittaepaesi/paesi/riolasardo.html
