Solarussa

Solarussa is a centre full of tourist attractions. Its past and the Roman presence have left indelible traces in the area, which are of certain interest for history and archaeological lovers. Roman ruins and a well, thought to be from the same period, can be seen at the foot of a little hill where the Church of San Gregorio rises. A visit is recommended to the suggestive Church of 'San Pietro Apostolo', built at the end of the XVII century in late Gothic style. It houses two paintings by Pietro Angeletti and several sacred silver objects. The Church of the 'Anime' is also of significant importance. It has a number of splendid decorative features like the nave with a wooden pulpit and the large framed entrance to the sacristy. Vine-growing is particularly important in the area and Solarussa has become a significant producer of 'Vernaccia'. As well as the agricultural and building industries which have gone on here since the Roman period, the craftwork production of bricks and tiles went on until the first half of the last century. These bricks were produced at Bangius e Cu'e Forru, located to the south of the village, which according to ancient documents, bordered on the village of Bidda Longa or Villalonga., destroyed by the plague in the XIV century. A walk around the historic centre of the village allows the visitor to admire the "Murales"(murals), painted at the initiative of the commune in 1995, and the sculpture by Luigi Taras which stands alongside the Church of the 'Grazie'.
