Zerfaliu

Characterised by the presence of a number of different archaeological complexes with imposing nuraghi, Zerfaliu is worth visiting for its historic centre which preserves examples of highly preserved architecture. Alongside the Parish Church dedicated to 'Nostra Signora nella Commemorazione di Sua Trasfigurazione', we find a Gothic- Pisan arch surmounted by a bell gable from the XI century, that bears witness to the Tuscan-Pisan presence in Sardinia. The church was built between the XV and the XVI century and originally had a Latin-cross floor-plan with a single nave and a rectangular apse. Over the course of time, the building has undergone various amounts of restoration work, until in 1947, the structure was completely demolished and rebuilt. Another ecclesiastical building of great value is the Church of San Giovanni. It derives from the enlarging of a church from the XIII century with a single aisle and a bell gable, surmounted on the faade by a sculpted cross. It is made entirely of limestone and basalt stones. One of the interesting events that takes place every year on 19th and 20th February is the 'Citrus Fruits Festival'. Sweets and cakes are made with citrus fruits and tasting of typical dishes takes place in the main square of the village. The streets of the village are coloured with the stalls selling sweets and crates of all the different kinds of oranges, while the folk groups from Irgoli, Ittiri and Cabras provide a suggestive backdrop to the event. Some of the most heartfelt religious celebrations are the ones dedicated to San Giovanni Battista on 24th June, the Feast of San Pio on 13th September and the Feast of Santa Greca, on the last Sunday in September.
