Gonnoscodina

It is very easy to move around from Gonnoscodina to visit places where Nature has created an incredible spectacle. In fact you can get to the Giara of Gesturi, with its famous little wild horses, or the Giara of Siddi, where the basalt rock has created with the passing of time unique vertical fractures with warm reddish colours or again, the slopes of Mount Arci with its unspoilt corners and obsidian mines. The historic centre of Gonnoscodina has an old bridge over the Rio Ischia whose construction date is unknown and the Churches of San Sebastiano and San Daniele. The latter, built in the first half of the XIX century, has become the symbol of the village, also because it stands right at the entrance to the village and is thus one of the first sights you see. The church has a central floor-plan and a large and elegant dome which reminds you of the one of the Pantheon; inside it houses a magnificent altar in polished marble. It is surrounded by a wonderful park with a mantle of Mediterranean shrub. The Church of San Sebastiano, on the other hand, has replaced the old Parish Church of San Bartolomeo, of which today only two rounded arches remain. The new parish church , dating to the XVII century is built in Ionic style in a Greek cross. It is one of the very few churches in the Diocese of Ales to be not just blessed but also consecrated, and houses a relic of the Holy Cross and an extremely valuable antique chalice.
