Allai

The surrounding area of Allai preserves the remains of numerous monuments, bearing witness to the fact that the area has been inhabited since ancient times. In the Pranu Lisa area, we find the single-towered "Sa pala 'e sa cresia" Nuraghe made of polygonal trachyte blocks. Little of the structure is still standing; the upper part is missing and on the inside, filled with debris from the collapsed ceiling, only one if the three original niches is still visible. A village probably used to stand around the site, but its ruins have been destroyed over the course of time and no traces remain. Not far from the inhabited centre we find the remains of a bridge dating back to the Roman Age; in fact, during this period this was the hub of intense commercial activity as demonstrated by the other sites brought to light, especially in the area near Fordongianus. At the centre of the village we find the parish Church of the 'Spirito Santo' (Holy Spirit), built in Gothic-Catalonian style between the XVI and XVII century. The façade has been modified with the addition of a bell gable with double lancet openings. Inside, the structure has a single nave with a number of different alternating chapels. A Holy Water stoup dating back to the period of the 'Giudicati' is preserved in the main chapel with its suggestive cross vault ceiling.
