Narbolia

Among the numerous peculiarities of its landscape the numerous ruins from the Nuraghic civilisation distinguish Narbolia. Imposing basalt masses colour the dry countryside in a succession of greys and reds that give the environment warm and suggestive colours. The "Is Arenas" beach, one of the longest and most beautiful beaches of the Province of Oristano, lies in the territory of Narbolia. Its very name evokes the stretches of dunes found here, the largest in the whole Island. This little desert, unique in Europe, underwent extensive reforestation, (especially with pines and acacias), in the first decades of the nineties, to such an extent, that it is rare today to find completely bare dunes. The beach has a yellowy-reddish sandy bottom with golden reflections, and fairly large grains of sand due to the presence of pebbles and shells especially at the water?s edge. In a number of the bays of the long 'Is Arenas' beach, we find stretches of coast with sand that looks like extremely white grains of rice and incredibly clean and crystal-clear water. In the historic centre of the village the characteristic murals adorn the walls of the houses; the best known and most famous of these are the ones which depict the cycle of the seasons, painted in 1956.
