Anfiteatro Romano

ANFITEATRO ROMANO DI CAGLIARI

Roman Amphitheatre - Cagliari The Roman Amphitheatre dates back between the first decade b.c. and the first decade a.c. The North-East side, the only one that has been partly preserved, was digged into the calcareous rock on the hill where it lies. The houses, buildings and fortresses spread around the city are full of rests belonging to the southern side steps of the amphitheatre, which were sacked and used as construction materials, until the municipality entered in possess of the theater and began some archaeological digs for the recovery of the area. The amphitheatre had a maximum capacity of 10.000 spectators, who came here to assist to the cruel fights between men and ferocious animals, or between gladiators, or even to watch public executions, just like in all the other cities of the Empire. Todays spectators do not come to the amphitheatre to vent their bloody nature, but to enjoy what has become a suggestive location for jazz concerts and national and international music events.
