The initiative to locate the new National Archaeological Museum in the current Citadel of Museums in Cagliari was taken around the mid 1950s. The initial idea was the realization of a poly-functional cultural structure, which could group together the Archaeological Museum and the National Picture Gallery on one side, and the Department of Archaeological and historical-artistic Sciences, the Specialization School for Sardinian Studies of the University of Cagliari and the Regional ethnographic Museum of Siamese Art (Cardu) on the other. The museum project inside the military Arsenal, designed by the architects P. Gazzola e L. Cecchini, slowly started taking shape and became operational in 1979. Sc: http://www.sardegnaturismo.it
