Church of Santa Maria Angiargia

The church of Santa Maria Angiargia (in Sardinian: Cresia de Santa Maria 'Angiàrgia) is a rural church located in the territory of Collinas, an inhabited center in south-western Sardinia. Consecrated to Catholic worship, it is part of the parish of San Michele Arcangelo, diocese of Ales-Terralba. The church is located in Su Angiu, about two kilometers from the town, near ancient Roman baths. The Sardinian term Angiàrgia or de su Angiu derives from Bangiàrgia (with the fall of the initial b) and in Italian means "del Bagno", therefore Santa Maria del Bagno or Bagnaria. In fact, at one hundred meters there is an ancient Roman bath, a small well two meters high full of spring water, equipped with steps that allow you to touch the bottom. According to legend, the trees in the wood where the church stands are dear to the Virgin Angiàrgia and a great punishment is reserved for those who violate this belief and try to remove them. There is no certain information about the period of its construction but it seems to date back to the 12th century. Every year, at the beginning of September, a heartfelt and evocative party is celebrated that lasts for three days. Procession in honor of Santa Maria Angiargia It is commonly believed that the relics of the two holy martyrs Miro and Casto were placed in the wall of that church.
