Gesturi

Gesturi is the gateway to the Giara, a basalt plateau of volcanic origin completely mantled in thick Mediterranean shrub and oak and cork trees, The unique aspect of this emotion-filled territory is the presence of the famous "Giara houses", miniature horses which are perfect replicas of full-sized horses and live wild here. Other interesting suggestions are provided by the late sixteenth and seventeenth century churches dotted all over the village, like the parish church dedicated to the Madonna dell'Assunta and the Church of Santa Maria Egiziaca, seat of the confraternity of the Santo Sepolcro. The home of the Blessed Fra Nicola can also be visited in the historic centre of the town and is a popular destination for the religious tourism of the Island. The village feasts are linked to the agro-pastoral world, like the Feast of S. Isidoro in mid May, with the blessing of the animals taking part in the procession and the one of San Giovanni Battista at the end of June, dedicated to shepherds. The anniversary of the death of Fra Nicola is commemorated on 8th June. Another interesting initiative of recent years is the 'marcia sarda per la pace' (Sardinian Peace March), organised together with the village of Laconi.
