Nostra Signora di Bonaria

In an attempt to save the boat the sailors threw everything into the sea, but as one of the boxes touched the water, the storm miraculously subsided. The crate, which ended up in the port of Bonaria, was opened by the friars who found a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary inside. The devotion towards this statue spread quickly, in particular with sailors who venerate the patron as their protector. On September 13th, 1907 Pious Pope X proclaimed The Virgin Mary of Bonaria the greatest patron in Sardinia. The night of the 24-25th of April is important to the walking pilgrimages from Sinnai to Bonaria Sanctuary. The followers leave at 1:30 at night and walk through the streets of Sinnai reaching the town of Settimo. From there, they move through Selargius, Monserrato, Pirri, Cagliari, and finally to the Church of Bonaria around 8:00 in the morning. In summertime, the first Sunday of July, the festival in honour of Virgin Mary of Bonaria is celebrated and with this ritual or procession leads the statue of the Virgin to the sea. The tradition began in 1866 when a group of young Sardinians having survived The Battle of Custoza (War of Independence III) wanted to give thanks to Our Lady of Bonaria for their salvation. In the afternoon, after having gone to holy mass, thousands of followers left from the basilica and accompanied the statue of the Virgin up to the sea-port. At this point the statue is placed upon a boat with a procession of boats behind the procession continues until Port Su Siccu where the image of the basilica reflects in its waters and with an impressive ceremony, a crown is thrown into the waters in memory of the sailors who lost their lives at war. Once everyone is back on land, the statue is accompanied back to the basilica which is lit up for the day. Src:http://www.sardegnaturismo.it/index.php?xsl=108&s=6484&v=2&c=3207&c1=&t=1
