Selargius

Not far from the Parish Church of the 'Assunta at the heart of the village, we find the Church of San Giuliano, which is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture from the XII century. It was built in limestone blocks, divided into a nave and two aisles separated by arches on columns and capitals from the Roman period. The Church of San Lussorio, with its two aisles is further away from the centre. Selargius? ancient ritual wedding ceremony provides a host of emotions in an ancient choral and joyous event, celebrated in the month of September, not just for the happy couple but also for the entire community who all take part. The public nature of the 'Matrimonio (Wedding) Selargino' is evident from the day before the ceremony, when the so-called "palio della sposa" is carried out, that is, all the bride?s furniture is transferred to the house where she and her spouse will live. The village gets all dressed up for the ceremony; rich tapestries are hung from the balconies, flowers are everywhere and sweets and cakes are given out in the streets. The soon-to-be-wed couple put on their traditional costumes in the rural houses of Selargius, known as 'pollas campidanese'. The groom wears an elegant costume whose main colours are black and white, while the bride wears a rich and multi-coloured dress. Straight after the dressing ceremony, the couple receive the blessings from their respective parents, who sprinkle their heads with grain and salt, (symbol of prosperity), and then shatter the plate which contained them. Next the meeting comes about; the groom reaches his bride?s house accompanied by a cortege of relations and friends led by a group of 'launeddas' players, who then join up with the bride?s cortege in the sacristy of the church. The wedding takes place in the Church of the 'Assunta' and everyone goes to the bride?s house for the sumptuous wedding feast. Before the newlyweds cross the threshold of their new home, the women of the quarter throw grains of corn. On the 21st of the same month, Selargius celebrates the religious Feast of San Lussorio, organised by the 'Corporation of San Lussorio'. The event includes a procession in which the simulacrums of the Martyrs, Lussorio, Cesello and Camerino are carried on a gilded coach from the Church of the 'Assunta' to the country sanctuary of San Lussorio.
