Assemini

There are a number of busy craftsmen?s workshops scattered around the village where precious handmade ceramic objects are produced. The different working methods are demonstrated at the local Craft Fair, organised by the Sardinian Institute for Craftwork and held in Via Lazio, where the products are also on sale. Assemini can also boast certain food traditions of great importance: in fact excellent "panadas", are made here, a culinary delight made of layers of pastry containing lamb and potatoes or eels and potatoes. On the outskirts of the village lies the 'Aquilegia Natural History Museum', which displays paleontological, botanical, geological and zoological findings within reconstructions of lagoon and mountain environments. As well as its rich tradition in craftwork, Assemini also offers splendid natural scenery at the 'Gtturu Mannu' Oasis, covered with ilex and mastic trees, oleanders and heather, declared an area of noteworthy public interest in 1975. Nearby you can also visit the San Leone mine, part of the Sardinian GeoMineral Park. A visit to the 'Contivecchi Salt Marshes' is also of considerable interest and offers a spectacular view of the waters of the Santa Gilla Lagoon and a chance to do some birdwatching. In fact a great variety of birdlife lives here, including the beautiful pink flamingos who in recent years have made their nests in the salt marshes.
