Elmas

The territory of Elmas has many scenic and artistic wonders that are little known but certainly merit a visit. The Santa Gilla lagoon is most certainly an interesting place for a trip; in the early morning you can see marvellous pink flamingos which populate the waters of the lagoon and offer brightly coloured scenes between the sea and the sky. The military airport is of great importance. It was constructed in 1925 on the shores of the Santa Gilla lagoon and was witness two years later to the memorable feats of De Pinedo and Balbo. In the early thirties, with the institution of the'Comando Aviazione Sardegna', a number of important buildings were erected, examples of Italian Rationalist Architecture. The huge airmen?s barracks is one of the most interesting buildings on the complex. Even though it incorporates an existing construction with NeoManneristic features, it shows distinct Rationalistic lines. The most spectacular feature of the whole building overlooking the enormous entrance-hall, is the huge helicoidal ramp for the airmen to go up and down. The little country church of Santa Caterina is of great interest; it was built by the Vittorini monks from Marseilles. It has a Romanesque floor plan with a single nave with an apse and preserves a wooden-trussed roof and inside, the original floor and threshold. It stands inside a large courtyard with a number of "cumbessias" (novenari) around its sides, where the pilgrims used to stay during feast days. The celebrations in honour of the Saint, start on Pentecost Monday and last for three days. The Parish Church of San Sebastiano is of more recent construction. The festivities in his honour are held on January 20th each year when by tradition, an enormous bonfire is lit and the believers are offered the local products to taste.
