Museo di storia naturale Aquilegia

Natural History Museum Aquilegia The main theme of the museum is the natural environment, with particular regard for Sardinia. It is organized into 6 sections: paleontology, mineralogy, botanics, with three zoology halls containing the reconstruction of two typical environments peculiar of Sardinia: the lagoon and the mountain. The museum route illustrates nature s rarities, the lagoon habitat and its animals, the hill habitat and its animals, the mineral, fossil and vegetal worlds. The stone section shows 200 species of Sardinian rocks, while minerals are present with over 600 species, especially Sardinian one, widely representative of the island s mineral context. There are rare and precious samples found during the 1960s and 1970s in mines now abandoned: calcites from the Iglesias area and from the iron mines of Giacurru, and the copper mines of Funtana Raminosa, the samples from S'Ortu Becciu, San Giovanni Miniera and Silius. Noteworthy are also the samples of cyrilovite from the Bosa area. The fauna section is organized with 500 examples of Sardinian stuffed birds and mammals: among the predatory birds, we can admire the royal eagle and a griffon pullo. The museum also presents molluscs and shells from all over the world. Among the insects, rare butterflies and interesting Curculionidi from Sardinia. The botanic section presents trees and herbs of Sardinia, with a herbarium of medical plants, particularly from the flora of the calcareous banks of the coasts.
