Gonnesa

Gonnesa is the site of the Romanesque Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, built between the XI and the XIII century in Romanesque style which, despite a series of modifications, can still clearly be seen in the facade which is marked by small arches surmounting a portal with a gothic arch. The village has an interesting geographical position which puts together the beauties of the coast with suggestive archaeological attractions. Here we find, the archaeology of the village of Seruci, made up of a nuraghe, a defence wall, a village of huts and a 'giants? tomb' but also the industrial archaeology of the disused mines, situated on Mount Onixeddu, at Seddas Moddizus and on Mount San Giovanni. The mine with the same name lies not far from the cave of Santa Barbara, an age-old cave lapped by a small lake and modelled by splendid concretions which have formed over the course of around 500 million years, with stalactites stalagmites and aragonite arabesques. The area is home to a rich and varied flora, typical of the Mediterranean shrub, oleaster, rosemary, juniper, mastic , myrtle, heather, strawberry trees, ilex, broom, lavender, asphodel and thorn. The 'Sa Masa' Marsh is found not far from Gonnesa and is extremely interesting for the numerous species of water birds that live here. The long coastline that stretches out near to the village includes Porto Paglia, characterised by a transparent crystal-clear sea. Scholars and fans of geology and paleontology will find an area full of geological and paleontological formations. A rare example of a fossilised dwarf elephant was found among the sandstone fossils, exhibited today in a museum in Basle. The village enjoys a moment of a collective feast on the occasion of the 'Rievocazione dei Moti'(Commemoration of the Revolt of 1906) from 20th to 25th May. The 'Estate Gonnesina' (Summer in Gonnesa) has an interesting programme and takes place from July to August with concerts, films, ballets, food and wine events and a number of folk displays. August is the turn of the 'Festival of Traditional Bread'. In the same month the sporting event of "Gonnesa corre" takes place, an international road race with athletes from all over the world. On the first Sunday in September, religious solemnity is the protagonist of the Feast of Sant'Isidoro held in the hamlet of Nuraxi Figus.
