Fluminimaggiore

The temple of Antas is well-known all over Sardinia and rises 9 km from the village in a pleasant isolated valley, where the river with the same name flows. The area was originally a Nuraghic sanctuary probably for funerary purposes but continued to be used up to late Roman times. The god worshipped here appears with a number of different names; as Sid, Punic warrior and hunter, Babai, the local god of Nuraghic origins and finally as Sardus Pater in the Roman Age. The present visible structure dates to the III century AD on a floor-plan from the Augustan Age. The spectacular Su Mannau cave is situated at 5 km from the village and has two main branches; inside one of these a number of archaeological findings have been brought to light, in particular a number of votive oil lamps dedicated to Tanit and the god Taurus. Fluminimaggiore?s Archaeological Museum displays a number of the objects found locally, from the Pre-Nuraghic, Nuraghic, Phoenician-Punic, Roman and Medieval Ages An Ethnographic Museum is to be found in the Liveri water mill which dates back to the eighteenth century and houses a collection of farming tools and objects from everyday life. Finally, the Paleontological Museum has an exhibition of fossils found in the area and a reconstruction of a marine setting from the Paleozoic era. The most interesting religious celebrations are the Feast in honour of Sant'Antonio of Padova, June 13th and the one in honour of Sant'Antonio Abate, January 16th.
