Monte Arcosu

The Monte Arcosu Nature Reserve occupies an area of ​​about 3600 hectares within the Sulcis mountain complex, one of the most interesting and important naturalistic environments in Sardinia. The reserve includes the two impressive massifs of Monte Arcosu (948 m) and Monte Lattias (1086 m) with the valley and the hills below. The entire area is mainly covered in holm oaks, followed by cork oaks and junipers. From the whole of the vegetation stand out ancient and imposing examples of strawberry trees and carob trees. A station of centuries-old rates on the slopes of Monte Lattias is particularly important. In the most degraded parts the trees cohabit with a thick Mediterranean scrub. The undergrowth is the ideal environment for numerous species of fungi, some of which are very rare and exclusive, and for lichens, of which 219 species have been determined so far. The fauna, in addition to the Sardinian deer, which has become the symbol of the reserve, includes a strong presence of wild boars, as well as some specimens of fallow deer within a wildlife area that can be visited. Among the carnivores we find the Sardinian wild cat, the fox, the marten, the weasel. In the clearings meet the Sardinian partridge and the wild rabbit. Extremely qualified is the presence of birds of prey, which includes the buzzard, the kestrel, the peregrine falcon, the sparrow hawk and the Sardinian variety of the soror. The golden eagle nests in the cliffs of Monte Arcosu. In the waters of the Is Fenugus river, in the slopes of Monte Lattias, the purest Sardinian trout population found in Sardinia has been identified.
