Comune di Capoterra

From an environmental point of view, Capoterra offers extremely interesting landscapes, ranging from the natural reserve on Mount Arcosu which lies close to the village, to the stupendous pastures of the Santa Lucia area. History and identity materialize in the lovely Romanesque Church of 'Santa Barbara de Montes' on the eastern slopes of the mountains of Capoterra. Dating from the Romanesque period, it attests to the presence here of Basilian monks, who built a little chapel fifty metres from the church, where legend tells that Barbara, Cagliari?s virgin and martyr, was martyred. In fact it appears that she was beheaded during the Christian persecutions. As her head fell to the ground, a spring of water gushed forth which still exists today and is known as "Sa Scabizzada". A peculiar feature of the church is the number of supports for ceramic basins which also bear witness to the strong contact with Islamic and Spanish-Moorish elements. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the area of Santa Barbara was chosen by a number of nobles as a summer residence. Even today a number of beautiful villas can still be seen immersed in parks of palm and olive trees. An inquisitive look at the sky can be had at the important Astronomical Observatory at Poggio dei Pini, where specialised teams of astrophysicists gaze at the stars.
