Chiesa di San Girolamo

In its first documentary attestation, dating back to 1565, the church of San Girolamo de la Murta, in the countryside between Capoterra and Poggio dei Pini, was donated by the archbishop of Cagliari to the hermit friar Francisco Boy, so that he could lead you solitary and contemplative life . The simple mononavata hall with wooden cover, however, in its orientation along the north-south axis (while the liturgical canonical one would have required the altar facing east), would leave a presumption of its use to use even more ancient profane. Its transformation into a place of worship can be traced back to the period of transition between the Middle Ages and the modern age, when Western Christian spirituality rediscovered the fascination of anachorism and therefore the complex figure of Saint Jerome, father and doctor of the Church, who he spent long periods of his lonely life in the desert. The church was erected as a canon in 1629, until it was suppressed by a law of 1867. The church quickly ruined and collapsed and the ruins were used as a sheepfold for sheep from the area's shepherds. Only in 1893 was it restored by private individuals, to which, for usucapione, also passed the title of property.
