Cardedu

There are plenty of natural attractions in the area. The territory has a very varied morphology with wide plains, gentle hills, mountain ranges and stretches of coast. In the mountainous areas, it is possible to enjoy a magnificent view which fixes the horizon and is lost in the azure-blue waters of the sea. The Mount Ferru area has a notable variety of species of animals and plants, attracting the attention of numerous visitors for the distinctiveness of its flora and fauna and for the possibility of going for country walks in the area. On the contrary the littoral area has two different kinds of coast: one sandy and one rocky. The sandy coast stretches for about 4.5km with one beach after another, like those of Foddini, Tramalitza, Museddu and of Perd'e Pera, with the latter giving way to the rocky coast of about 1 km, characterised by its rugged shape, its particular reddish colour and by the presence of low-lying Mediterranean shrub; at the southern-most point of the rocky coast we find the beach known as 'Sa Spiaggetta', due to the curious feature of the smooth, quite large pebbles that are found here. The little centre has only been recently developed but the population who live here, possess a thousand-year old cultural heritage which has sunk its roots in the old centre of Old Gairo. This patrimony is expressed both in local knowledge but also within the sphere of popular tradition and in those events which are the exterior manifestation of religious feeling. The craftwork is linked to the activities that in the past, were the main means of income and which at the moment are being re-launched and repossessed by a part of the population, such as knife-making and basket-making.
