Sardara?s importance in the past is demonstrated by the number of beautiful churches scattered around the urban centre. The late-Gothic(XV century) Church of Sant?Anastasia rises next to the Nuraghic well with the same name, not far from the Parish Church of the 'Assunta' built between the XIV and XV century in Romanesque-Gothic style. To be noted are the latter?s singular reliefs sculpted on the arches and on the star-studded ceiling of the first chapel on the right, the statue of San Bartolomeo and a pipe organ from 1758. The fourteenth century ex-parish Church of San Gregorio should not be missed, extremely interesting for its original shape, evidence of the transitional phase between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. There are numerous feasts of certain interest: Sant?Antonio in June, the 'Assunta' in August, Sant?Anastasia in November and finally the Feast of 'Santa Maria de is Acquas' halfway through September, when the statue of the Saint is carried around the streets on an ox-drawn cart, in a procession from the village to the little country church. The celebrations for carnival are made distinctive by the organisation of "Sa cursa de sa coga" (the witches? race), during which riders from all over Sardinia riding at a breakneck pace, try to spear a hanging ring, previously put up by a rider dressed as a 'coga' (witch). As soon as the ring is speared, the real feast begins, with spectacular paired races involving all the riders. The Sardara Thermal Baths are found at just a few kilometres from the village, a modern curative centre, not far from which we also find evidence of man?s presence here since the Eneolithic period, such as the 'Arigau' Nuraghe or the remains of the Roman baths. In July 2005, the village of Sardara, together with those of Aggius, Laconi and Gavoi received the prestigious 'Orange Flag' Award from the Touring Club, awarded to the small places in the hinterland which are distinguished by their excellence in service, quality and welcome.
