Museo delle cere anatomiche di C. Susini

The Museum of Clemente Susini s anatomical waxworks The museum is situated within the Citadel of Museum in Cagliari. The main theme is represented by the anatomical aspects, here faithfully reproduced, of the human body. The Sardinian collection includes 23 anatomical polychrome waxes attributed by the experts to the full artistic maturity of Clemente Susini (1754-1814) and considered among the most beautiful existing in the world. In these waxes, a figurative search, generally absent in the previous works by the Florentine artist, is associated with extraordinary perfection in anatomic detail. It is quite evident in the realism with which Susini transposed the image of death on the wax faces. The waxes were commissioned between 1801 and 1805, by the viceroy Carlo Felice, through the anatomy professor Francesco Antonio Boi. The waxes were modelled in the wax modelling laboratory in the Museum of Specola in Florence, where Boi assisted in the dissections. In Cagliari we find faithful reproductions of these dissections.
