Muravera

The Church of San Nicola in the village is of great interest and over the centuries has undergone numerous modifications and additions. It has a single nave and a number of Late-Gothic chapels dating back to the original structure of the XV and XVI century. Some of the most interesting remains from an archaeological point of view are the Megalithic complexes of 'Piscina Rei' and 'Cuili Piras' each with a great number of menhirs. Computer and data-processing studies of these monoliths have been carried out, to try and discover the way they were used and the reasons why these clusters of stones were built. The results of the survey have led to the hypothesis that the menhirs were used as a stone calendar to work out the seasonal cycles; other daily correlations have also been found, which allowed a constant check of the rising and setting of the sun and the moon throughout the year. Three Spanish towers are found in the coastal zone, the Towers of 'Capo Ferrato', 'Torre Saline' and the Tower of the 'Dieci Cavalli' which for centuries were bastions against the pirates? raids. From a natural point of view, the lagoons, which open up along the coast, are of considerable beauty: Feraxi, Colostrai, Torresalinas and Murtas, as well as the marvellous white beaches that are mirrored in the Tyrrhenian Sea. A very popular destination with tourists is undoubtedly 'Costa Rei' with its crystal-clear sea and the beaches of Capo Picci, Colostri, Feraxi and Mimose al Mare. Among the typical traditional products of the village we must not forget its excellent agricultural products. In fact, Muravera is very famous for its citrus fruit orchards and the quality of its oranges. The 'Citrus Fruits Festival' is held in April and attracts many tourists. Lots of stalls are set up along the streets of the historic centre where you can buy oranges, grapefruits, mandarin oranges and clementines and at the same time taste the typical traditional cuisine of Muravera.
